Disneyland offers a new guided tour, Walt’s Main Street Story, which includes a guide and a visit upstairs to Walt’s apartment. I am a lover of Disneyland and enjoy learning about the history in the parks so I decided to go on the tour with a fellow Disney friend. I also wanted to be able to share my thoughts and review with others cause I get asked a lot if something is worth the price. I also did the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour a few years back and I will compare the two tours further in this post. Let’s dive into the details about the tour.
About the tour
Check in at the Tour Gardens area (located right next to City Hall) and you’ll get a lanyard. You also get an ear piece to hear your tour guide as you walk up and down Main Street. The tour begins in Town Square with some historical details about Walt. Your tour guide talks to you about Walt’s life, points out significant spots and shares stories as you walk up and down Main Street. If you’re a fan of Disney history you’ll really enjoy the fun facts. But they save the best for last!
Walt’s Apartment is the best part
The highlight of the tour was going up above the fire station to Walt’s apartment. Currently the only way to go up into Walt’s apartment is by doing this tour. I loved this last part of the tour. We spent time in this space learning about Walt, his family, what they used the apartment for and more. You’re not allowed to have your cameras out but there is a PhotoPass photographer that comes to take your photo. You then get to keep those photos as a keepsake and memory! Then after touring the apartment you go out on the patio to enjoy a cookie and your choice of soda. While out on the patio we asked our tour guide questions and enjoyed the ambiance. I gazed down on Town Square and thought of Walt doing the same. It felt special to be up in that space and have time to enjoy the park from this unique perspective.
Was it worth it?
I did the tour with another Disney fan. For me it was worth the time spent in the apartment since this is the only way to go up there. But this is not a tour I’d take my whole family on cause it wouldn’t interest them. There were only 4 of us in our tour group. There are up to 12 spots per tour. So invite other friends and family to join you. It was great to have the tour guide basically all to ourselves to ask questions. The current price for the guided tour is $160 for 90 minutes. And there are no Magic Key discounts.
How does it compare to A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour
Years ago I was able to go on the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour, my full review is over here. So going into this tour I was afraid it might be a lot of repeat information. But in fact it’s not at all. The only thing that was the same was visiting Walt’s Apartment. Back then you also got to visit Walt’s apartment on that tour. But the stories and details I heard on this tour were more in depth about the apartment. I got to see more of the apartment plus experience the patio. So if you did the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour years ago and enjoyed it then you’ll have another great experience on this tour as well. It is not the same tour.
Other details about the tour
The ticket price is just for the tour. You need to have a park ticket and reservation to go on this tour. There is an option to get a gluten free cookie. And if you can’t do stairs they do have an elevator to use.
How to book this tour?
Go to the Disneyland website and search guided tours. You can book your tour in advance. They do offer same day purchase of the tour if space is available. Check at the Tour Gardens in the morning next to City Hall.
Other tours available at Disneyland
I have done the Holiday Time guided tour and shared my thoughts about why I enjoyed that tour. I also went on the Happiest Haunts guided tour during Halloween time. I give a very in depth look in my video about what’s included, where the nighttime views are for Halloween Screams and if this tour is worth it. Overall guided tours are a great way to see and hear more about the parks. If you love history and Disney you will enjoy a guided tour. Lastly for my 50th birthday I checked a Disney bucket list item off my wish list! I went on my first ever VIP tour at the Disneyland Resort. It was the best experience! For all the details on how we saved money, was it worth it, what’s included, how to make the most of your tour check out my video!
